General Information

Under the direction of the commanding officer, Capt. Dan Hopkins, U.S. Navy, the Naval Science staff at 海角社区 includes five to seven officers and enlisted personnel who teach, mentor and train approximately 65 midshipmen in the 海角社区 NROTC unit.

The unit is comprised of students from the 海角社区, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester State University, and Brown University. The battalion is divided into companies and led by the midshipman battalion commander, a fourth-year student who is chosen for outstanding leadership qualities.

Storied Tradition

Leadership has been an important tenet of the Naval Science program since its founding in 1941. More than 15 海角社区 graduates have earned the high-level ranks of flag and general officers in the Navy, Army and Marine Corps. Exemplifying the selflessness demanded by military service, 海角社区 alumni have received three Medals of Honor, four Navy Crosses and 18 Silver Stars.

The late Rev. John E. Brooks, S.J., 鈥49, the longest-serving president of the College and himself a World War II veteran, firmly supported military training at 海角社区, saying 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 extremely important that the armed forces have leadership that鈥檚 been trained in the liberal arts. They have a sense of history and are able to articulate and have good moral judgment.鈥

Will I Fit in?

You won鈥檛 know until you join. You have to join the program and experience it for yourself. That is why the first year is without obligation. We are looking for intelligent and physically fit men and women of high moral character who can be trained to assume positions of leadership and great responsibility in the Navy and Marine Corps. If you fit that description, and if you prefer to be a leader rather than a follower, then you owe it to yourself to give it a try.

Naval Science Courses

Any student in the College may take Naval Science courses. Students receive credit for satisfactory completion of accredited Naval Science courses but have no official status in the NROTC Program and receive none of the benefits provided to NROTC students.
