Why Women Won

How, when, and why did women in the US obtain legal rights equal to men’s, decades after they gained the right to vote? Of the 144 critical moments in women’s rights history from 1905 to 2023, almost half occurred between 1963 and 1973. The greatly increased employment of women, the formation of women’s rights associations, and the unstinting efforts of various members of Congress were behind the advances. But women became splintered by marital status, employment, region, and religion. Claudia Goldin, Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University, explains how a substantial group of women emerged in the late 1970s to oppose various rights for women and to champion a different vision for women. Black Women's Struggles for Reproductive Rights: Then and Now

In the 1840s, Dr. Marion Sims’ experiments on the enslaved women Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey in Montgomery, Alabama led him to be called the “Father of Gynecology.” Today Black women are almost three times as likely to die during or shortly after pregnancy than are white women, regardless of income or education level, and the majority of Black Americans live in states with strict abortion bans. How has the history of systemic racism and sexism shaped Black women’s reproductive health? How can we remove barriers to equal care?

The panel includes Deirdre Cooper Owens, Associate Professor of History and Africana Studies at the University of Connecticut and author of Medical Bondage:  Race, Gender, and the Origins of American Gynecology (2017); Michelle Brodwer, an artist and founder of of I AM MORE THAN.... Youth Empowerment Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama;  Dr. Yvonne Gomez-Carrion, M.D., assistant professor and OB/Gyn at Harvard Medical School and attending at Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center, Boston.

Raising our Voices in Church | Emily Reimer Barry, Ph.D

Emily Reimer Barry, Ph.D. is a member of the faculty at University of San Diego where she teaches in the Theology and Religious Studies Department. She teaches undergraduate courses in Catholic theology, Christian ethics, sexual ethics, and ethical responses to HIV and AIDS. Her research interests include women’s experiences of HIV and AIDS, feminist theology and spirituality, cross-cultural analysis of gender roles and marriage traditions, reproductive justice, and the intersection of public health and Catholic social teachings. She is a member of the Society of Christian Ethics, Catholic Theological Society of America, and Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church. Dr. Reimer Barry is currently working on a grant-funded Wabash cohort project on anti-racist pedagogies as well as a book project focusing on reproductive justice and Catholic ethics.

Dr. Imeratori-Lee is the chair of the religious studies department at Manhattan College. Her research interests focus on Catholic ecclesiology, in particular the intersection of ecclesial identity with feminist and Latinx Catholic thought. She is also interested in the relationship between Catholic theology, sexuality, and education; the intersection of Mariology and ecclesiology; intercultural theology; gender studies; and the relationship of women, the poor and other marginalized groups to church structure and governance.

The Rt. Rev. Dr. Bonnie A. Perry '84 is the 11th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan (EDOMI). She was consecrated bishop on February 8, 202, a position that oversees a diocese that consists of 77 congregations in the southeastern region of Michigan. She has been active in work for racial justice, LGBTQ inclusion and in leading efforts to address gun violence.

In this talk, Professor Basu will share her reflections from unconventional approaches she has taken to explore cultural and disciplinary barriers to STEM learning; and then describe how her experiences have informed the inclusive design of the integrative neuroscience curriculum and core courses. How are �������� faculty working, as a community, on changing our pedagogical practices and our mindsets to promote broader student achievement of learning goals?
